TPS Smokes Boston CrossFit!

On Sunday 8/24, TPS participated in the Corporate Challenge (Sponsor's Relay Race) at the 2nd Annual N.E. Firefighter Combat Challenge© (FFCC)Series in Haverhill, MA. Competing against other businesses that helped sponsor the event, the Corporate Challenge was a 5 man relay team that completed the same course obstacles, but without having to run it in full firefighter gear. Paul Weinburg, who promoted the event, decided to pair us against CrossFit Boston in the Best Gym category since both teams would have a distinct advantage over the other 6 companies.

CrossFit is the “unofficial” fitness representative to the FFCC, so naturally, with the gym’s reputation on the line, we took this challenge very seriously and asked Steve DiLello to coach the group then put together a solid team of specialized athletes: Rob Gregorio – conditioning sadist, Cory Davis – conditioning expert extraordinaire, Mike “Mailbox” Pelosi – super hero strength maven and Dave Pietrantonio – UnderArmour’d mega athlete. We only need 4 athlets as opposed to the 5 allowed!
The difficulty with this competition is the highly specialized equipment that is used: a five-story stair tower, donut roll hose hoist, Keiser Force machine sled and mallet, a “Rescue Randy” victim doll and live, water filled hoses. Without any of these implements to train on, we improvised what we could at the gym and then entered the day’s competition with only a few moments to warm up on the actual course.
Needless to say, it boiled down to a battle of training methodologies, CrossFit’s “endurance” methods to TPS’ strength based methods, and the winner was overwhelmingly TPS! With a blazing time of 1:33 (which included 4 seconds of added penalties for falling on the course) to CrossFit’s time of 1:38, we took home 1st Place and garnered a lot of interest for FFCC training advice.

Congratulations to all who competed and a big shout to CrossFit Boston!
