    Tire Flipping at TPS
For Steven Toby, 2014 looks to be a banner year with many milestones set on the horizon. For quite a few years now I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with Steven as he’s a regular in my 12:00PM Tuesday/Thursday Awesome Camp.

During this span he’s trained for and competed in numerous Powerlifting meets with great success. Steve has made vast improvements in both strength and technique with the Powerlifts (Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift) and in 2014 he looks to continue this trend.

Steve is currently training for the RPS sanctioned meet that is being held in Johnston R.I., on the 29th of March, and will be the first time in over a year that he will be stepping on the platform. The past year has been quite frustrating for Steve as life, some nagging injuries and an untimely/unfortunate injury kept him from competing in the last meet he trained for, which was the October RPS meet TPS hosted.

To his credit, Steve kept an amazingly positive attitude through all of this, did what was necessary to heal up and recover and continued training with the next competition in sight. I can’t stress enough how truly impressed I was with the mental and physical toughness he displayed in overcoming these setbacks. Anyone who has trained for and competed in a powerlifting meet understands how much time, effort and discipline goes into meet preparation, let alone how beat up your body feels when peaking for such competition. Making it through that is a feat in and of itself, but to have gone through that and be weeks from competition, only to have a non-training related injury knock you out from stepping on the platform is heartbreaking and beyond frustrating. For that, I tip my hat (and as you know It doesn’t come off very often) to Steven Toby for displaying the fortitude to not quit and throw in the towel but rather rise above and overcome such obstacles with the focus of attaining a goal.

Good luck Steve, all of us here at TPS are pulling for you.

Olympic Lifting Report from Coach Dustin D:

TPS had 6 lifters compete in the Atlantic States Weightlifting Open on Saturday, February 15th.

Everyone had a great meet and beat their previous meet PR’s and posted a few overall PR’s. Andrew Sparrow and Sean Corbett both competed in the 85kg. weight division. Andrew posted a 70kg. snatch and a 90kg. clean and Jerk for a 160kg. total while Sean posted a 77kg. snatch and a 97kg. clean and jerk for a 174 kg. total.

Chris Erickson and Ben Priest both competed in the 94 kg. weight division. Chris posted a 65kg. snatch and a 93 kg. clean and jerk for a 158 kg. total, while Ben posted a 70 kg. snatch and a 105 kg. clean and jerk for a 175 kg. total.

Scott Gadd competed in the 105+kg. weight division. Scott posted an 80kg. snatch and a 95 kg. clean and jerk for a 175 kg. total. Jessica Weisman competed in the women’s 69 kg. weight division and had an outstanding meet. Jessica took 2nd in the open 69 kg. class with a 66 kg. snatch and a 75 kg. clean and jerk for a 141 kg. total. Jessica also competed as a Masters athlete and broke New England Masters records for snatch, clean and jerk, and total on her way earning the title of best Masters lifter. It was an amazing day and I definitely look forward to coaching everyone to some new PR’s in the next meet.
